New! Book 1 1/2 for the Complete Church Piano Course

Thousands of people have used the Complete Church Piano Course over the last 5 years to learn how to play church piano. The books have gotten rave reviews and literally zero complaints. The course definitely works, but I’ve talked to a lot of people who have kind of stalled out in their learning. These people have completed Book One, but they are still struggling a little bit with the concepts introduced in Book Two.

Enter Book 1 ½. This new book is not necessary for completing the course, but it is a great supplement to help ease the transition from Book One to Book Two. Book Two is substantially harder than Book One, so I wrote Book 1 ½ to kind of bridge that gap and provide more practice songs at the beginner level.

If you’re at that point, where you are playing songs out of Book One, but Book Two is still just a little too difficult for you, then Book 1 1/2 is exactly what you need. Even if you are only about halfway to three quarters of the way through Book One, you’ll probably be able to jump right into Book 1 ½ and start benefiting from it right away.

Specifically, if you’re doing well with playing the songs in Book One with stationary chords but aren’t ready to tackle those broken chords yet, Book 1 1/2 will allow you to learn some additional songs that have been arranged using only stationary chords. It will also help ease you into playing broken chords, which are also used in some of the songs.

Book 1 ½ was designed to be used between Book One and Book Two and contains new information that is not found in any of the other books in the course. It introduces playing arpeggios in the left hand, which is a great way to add variety to your arrangements.

Where to Get the Complete Church Piano Course

My personal PayPal account was shut down last week. You may remember hearing that PayPal shut down the church’s account about six or seven months ago, but they figured out that I’m the pastor of FWBC, and now they’ve shut down my personal PayPal account as well.

The only thing that I was using my personal account for was to sell my piano books. For a while now, Paul Wittenberger has also been selling the books on his website, Framingtheworld.com, so I’m going to just let him sell the books exclusively there instead of setting up another way to accept payment here on my blog.

I actually had to refund all of the recent orders because of the way my PayPal account was permanently suspended. I refunded all the money and just redirected all those people to Framing the World to purchase the books there.

This course is very user friendly. I’ve literally sold thousands of these books and given away hundreds, and all of the feedback I’ve received has been very positive. In fact, I’ve never had one person complain about or criticize any of the books. If someone didn’t like them, I honestly haven’t heard about it.

This course is designed to be self-guided, so you don’t have to know how to read music or hire a piano teacher. This easy, yet fast paced course will have you ready to participate in a church service after completing Book One. You will start out from day one playing real hymns in the key in which they were written.

Book One

Book One is designed for an absolute beginner. I’ve seen people with no prior experience pick up this book and start playing Nothing but the Blood on the first day. If you are an absolute beginner, Book One might take you around six months to master, but it contains everything you need to play 12 different hymns. I even made some companion videos, which I posted on YouTube, to help you through Book One in case you have any questions or just want to hear how the songs are supposed to sound.

Book Two

Book Two takes you to a higher level of skill and proficiency. It builds on the first book, and gets you playing with a fuller, more complex sound.

Book Three

Book Three takes everything you learned in Books One and Two and shows you how to apply it to other songs in the hymnal without needing any sheet music. The goal of the book is to get you playing directly from the hymnal.

If you already know how to play the piano and just want to learn how to play hymns, you still need to start with Book One. Otherwise Books Two and Three might not make any sense to you. You might blow through Book One in one day if you are a good piano player, but it is foundational for the rest of the course.

The Complete Church Piano Course: Book Three

The primary goal of Book Three is to teach you to play directly from the hymnal. The first thing you must realize is that the music in the hymnal is not written for piano. It is written for voices singing in four part harmony. Therefore, if you were to play exactly what is written in the hymnal, it usually would not sound right on the piano. For this reason, your right hand will be playing exactly what you see on the page in the hymnal at this point, but your left hand will continue playing the chord and octave patterns that you learned in Book Two.

The first challenge of playing from the hymnal is that you will now be asked to play two notes at a time with your right hand instead of only one. Although technically you could continue playing only one note at a time with your right hand by playing just the top note of the four notes on the page, your playing will sound much better when you play both notes in the treble clef part. If you have mastered Books One and Two, you are ready to take this step.

The second challenge is that the hymnal does not tell you which chords to play with your left hand. Therefore you must learn how to figure out which chords to play based upon the notes written on the page. Eventually, your ear may help you instinctively know which chords to play. Until then, several techniques will be taught in this book that will help you quickly identify the proper chords to play in the left hand.

Your goal is to eventually be able to play hundreds of hymns from the hymnal on demand. You will not be able to memorize that many songs or their chord progressions. In order to become an effective church pianist, you will need to become very good at sight-reading the treble clef part and instantly knowing which chords to play with the left hand. This book will give you the tools to do so.
